Precision Optics
What Will You Do in Precision Optics at LAYERTEC?
As a precision optician, you’ll be the expert in glass and glass processing. You’ll be familiar with the necessary raw materials and can transform a raw glass block into an optical component with an extremely flat and smooth surface.
To create such precise optics, you will learn the various manufacturing steps with us:
- Prefabrication: Large glass blanks are cut or drilled to the correct size.
- Next Steps: You define the shape of the glass (lapping) and bring the surface to a high gloss (polishing). This is where your fine motor skills come into play.
- Final Step: You check the quality of the component using various measurement methods to identify surface irregularities, scratches, or other defects.
How Does Your Apprenticeship Work?
- 3.5 years of vocational training (possible reduction to 3 years with outstanding performance)
- Dual training at our company and at the vocational school in Jena-Göschwitz
- Months 1-18: Comprehensive basic training in glass processing at the Jena Training Center, covering glass handling, grinding, cementing (gluing), lapping (material removal with loose grain), polishing and aligning optics, CNC machine control, and light-based testing (interferometric evaluation)
- From month 19 onwards: Application and expansion of the knowledge gained in manufacturing at LAYERTEC
What Should You Bring?
- German language proficiency, minimum B2 level
- Technical understanding and spatial awareness
- Logical and solution-oriented thinking
- Teamwork skills and a willingness to learn
- Fine motor skills, precision, and attention to detail
- Technical interest and ideally good grades in math and physics
- Good English and computer skills are also desirable
But don’t worry if you can’t check all the boxes. You’ll learn a lot during your apprenticeship, and we look forward to guiding you along the way!
What Happens Next?
As a precision optician, you can specialize in various fields where skilled professionals are in demand (e.g., hand manufacturing, spherical optics, planar optics, special bonding techniques, metrology, etc.). Additionally, further training as a trainer, master precision optician, industrial master in optics, or technician in precision engineering is possible.
If you’re interested and qualified, there’s also the option to take on a leadership role with more responsibility.
